Three Mail-Related Considerations For Vacation Rental Owners

Posted on: 15 March 2018

One of the challenges of owning and operating a vacation rental is that there are many different things to think about. A big reward, however, is when you're able to successfully manage any given area so that it augments your business. One topic for vacation rental owners to keep in mind is safety — with the amount of time that the vacation rental sits empty, you don't want criminals being able to recognize that no one is in the house. Ensuring that the grass is cut is one way to give your vacation rental a lived-in appearance, but you'll also need to turn your attention to the mail situation. Mail overflowing from your mailbox can be an obvious sign that the house is empty. Here are three details to deal with.

Don't Get Mail Delivered To That Address

If you aren't living in the vacation rental, there's little value in having mail come to that physical address. Assess what organizations might wish to send mail to you at the vacation rental, and then either specify that this mail should come to you at your home address, or be sent to you electronically. For example, the local utility company will likely want to send mail to your vacation rental, but ensure that bills and promotional mailings aren't sent.

Say "No" To Junk Mail

Even if you aren't getting personalized mail sent to you at the vacation rental, junk mail could still be an issue — and if there's a large pile of junk mail in the mailbox and even on the ground below it, criminals can easily identify that the house is vacant. A simple solution is to buy a sign that reads "No Junk Mail" and place it either on your mailbox or directly above it. Ideally, this will prevent the local mail carrier and others from leaving problematic junk mail.

Recruit A Neighbor

Even with a "No Junk Mail" sign, people may still put mail in the box outside of your vacation rental. If you aren't visiting the residence regularly, it may not take long for the mail to pile up and send a message that you don't wish to send. Ask a neighbor who lives near your vacation rental to check out the mail situation every few days and throw out junk mail, while keeping anything that appears personalized. This favor can go a long way toward giving your vacation rental a lived-in feel.
